Death of a Salesman

Quote: "Because the man who makes an appearance in the business world, the man who creates personal interest, is the man who gets ahead. Be liked and you will never want." - Willy Loman

Question: What does this quote reveal about Willy and his personality and philosophy? Do you think his values are good and are ones to be lived by?

  1. This reveals that he cares most about his business and that his life revolves around getting ahead in the business world and making money. His philosophy in life to make money and be liked makes him push away his son. Willy does not see he wrong in his ways-"I simply asked him if he was making any money. Is that a criticism?" (6). I do not think his values are good, especially because he pushed away his family as he lives by them. He cares only for himself and not ruining his pride, not other people.

  2. This shows Willy's obsession with being successful. So far in the story, he has only worked, talked about work, or dream of success. This characteristic makes him seem like less of a family man because his heart isn't with them, but rather business. Willy's priorities are centered around being sucessful. These are not good values to live by because the people that love and support you should not be left behind on the path to success.

  3. This reveals Willy's focus on relationship and connections as means to gain success rather than hard work. As Linda tries to convince Willy that Biff really should study for math Willy insists "There's nothing the matter with him! You want him to be a worm like Bernard? He's got spirit, personality" (26). Willy clearly thinks hard work such as studying is fruitless where as appearance to others and likability are necessary for success. This strategy has not gotten him too far as he repeatedly tries to end his own life, he lives in regret for not taking the opportunity Ben once gave him, and he is intensely envious of his less likable neighbor.
