Antigone quote and question

"Often the thoughts of those who plan dark deeds
Betray themselves before the deed is done.
The criminal who being caught still tries
To make a fair excuse, is damned indeed."

page 139

Do you agree with this statement made by Creon? Why or why not? Possibly relating to Crime and Punishment?

  1. I do agree with this statement. A lot of criminals are anxious, especially before they commit a crime. This is true for Raskolnikov. They often try to justify their crime with some form of positive motive, such as a good deed.

  2. I agree with this statement as well, especially the part about their minds "betraying themselves" before the action is even committed. I think this is due to the human feeling of guilt. Even when someone is merely THINKING about doing something wrong, he immediately feels guilty just planning it out. Then after the deed is done, he is still trying to make excuses for himself, then he really is doomed because the problem will just keep getting bigger and bigger instead of ending the problem by admitting that he is wrong. Justifying wrong actions only create a deeper hole for the person. It definitely relates to Raskolnikov because, before he even murders Lizaveta, he already starts to panic, and then afterwards he constantly makes excuses for himself. Great question Lisa!
